The Chinese Indulgences - Part 1

Part 1

[Note: This blog of mine is concerning a sensitive issue and may NOT suitable for every reader. I translated this article from a local Chinese magazine, Feminine, dated back in 1st Nov 2001. Hence, I'm neither writing anything of my own creations, nor embellishing it to make it more interesting. It was with 3 very clear pictures of a female foetus on the chopping board and inside the ready soup. But I will not put the pictures here, for they are not suitable for everyone to view. Also, I’ll be risking this entire blog to be rejected by AF. To those who feel repulsive and/or not accepting it, for it affects one’s thoughts of Chinese culture, then PLEASE pass over].

This is a subject on the general gender prejudices, leading to a specific one, completely unknown by the rest of the world. The Chinese consumption of human foetuses. Where? Guangdong, China. Why? For rejuvenation (for women) and as an aphrodisiac (for men) purposes. Read on.

This idea returned after an e-pal sent me an article on abandoned female babies in China, in the 90s. These ill-fated babies were then put in orphanages and one of them was referred as Dying Rooms of Beijing. All were baby girls, little cared, malnourished and in horrifying conditions.

Yes. Ill-fated female babies are still abandoned in China. Or when the few months old foetuses’ genders are determined through the ultrasound machines, the Chinese mothers would abort them. Or infanticide ‒ killing the female babies once they’re born.

The news of consumption of human foetuses, only FEMALES, in China were indeed very disturbing. It was an uncomfortable, unpleasant, greatly awful issue to talk about. But after keeping the article for 5 years, I finally decided to write it down.

Actually I had written on this subject and posted it successfully in my previous handle, ‘mistyfern’. But that was few years back. This time, AF rules and regulations are getting stricter. I only hope this would pass AF baking flour sieve.

They blamed it from the one- policy in China. But the actual reasons was ‘chung nam heng nui’ or ‘male is heavy, female is light’, indicated the preference of sons to daughters. Another was to ‘chuin jung cib doi’ or the continuation of the family lineage, which was traditionally crucial. Also, the next most important reason of consuming foetuses was believed to return the rejuvenation of beauty for older women, and a great aphrodisiac for older men.

Infanticide and the selling and buying human foetuses were illegal in China. But it was not uncommon to see a family of more than one in a village in Guangdong, despite of the one- policy. (Or that is obsolete? I’m lagging behind?). This was the village where the reporters of the magazine obtained the brow-raising information. No one knew how these illegal activities could be easily taking place there.

The magazine reporters who visited this place followed the activities closely. With the help of a local there, Mr. Wong, they later went to a restaurant in Guangdong, Fa Shan shi, or Fa Shan city that well known of offering such horrid soups. It cost RMB 3,000 to 4,000 for a double-boiled bowl of a 5 to 7 months’ old aborted female foetus with herbs. It was little expected that people there were so opened about the subject that generously (nonchalantly, I think) provided the crucial information on it.

Mr. Wong, a 62 years old man, boldly and proudly claimed that he had a 19 years old mistress and able to have s*xual intercourse every night, all from the nourishing effects of the double-boiled foetuses with herbs that he consumed routinely.

When they reached the restaurant, the owner and cook, Sifu Li, said that the entire process of it wasn’t easy. The raw materials (foetuses) must be available, fresh ones only, and not frozen. At the time the reporters were there, the raw materials were not available.

But with the assistance of Mr. Wong, who called up the reporters days later and informed them of a new ‘raw material’ just arrived in the restaurant. Then the reporters managed to get to see and take pictures of the real, and no more ‘only the talks’.

Sifu Li brought them to the kitchen. They saw a dead foetus, only a little bigger than a kitten, on the chopping board. Sifu Li said the foetus was 5 months old, a little too young.

Sifu Li explained that one bowl of double-boiled foetus cost around RMB 3,500 for a . But the amount paid to the mothers (who sold their foetuses), varied from the months old of the foetus, and if the foetus was alive or dead.

If the foetus was dead, usually from induced abortion in the clinics, the middle person would pay the mother a ‘hong bao’ (red packet) of only a few hundreds RMB. But if the foetus was alive, from delivering by the midwives and soaked in salt water to maintain the ‘freshness’, the mother would get a RMB 2,000 ‘hong bao’, as ‘adoption fees’. (My goodness. How ridiculous). But when the foetuses arrived to the restaurant, ALL of them were already dead, of course. And recklessly, the foetuses were not scrutinized how long they had died before reaching the restaurant, or were already dead from the clinics or homes.

So, is this the consequence of the one--policy in China? Or the Chinese people’s indulgences of nourishing their bodies, to maintain youthfulness or increase libidinous, with anything, at any prices?

I can't forgive those people who make pleasure and earn from killing her own blood.
I can't believe this is true. I would rather age than eat or drink that soup!
I can't stop crying right now. HORRIBLE!
